For a child’s drawing it’s got a lot of depth

, but it doesnt carry a lot of emotion. It just talks to you, and lets you know what its about. The other one, which also came from a child, was less successful. It was too small to be worth its size and it didnt have enough room to be dramatic, but it had a nice feeling that got you. The kid in it was doing something so serious, and in a way thats really important to me. I dont really want to get into that, but Im not doing it for publicity. Its not meant for anyone else to do.I dont really want to get into the subject of a painting being about or about a certain subject or a style of painting. I want to get into the subject of art itself. The artist who makes a painting and makes it good must have a really strong idea of what the subject of his art is. I dont know how many paintings that Ive seen where somebody tried to do something really fancy and said, Look, Im just going to make a painting and get paid for it. Theres no magic money in it. It would be nice if somebody would give it to me so that I can spend a whole lot more time thinking about what Ive just done. Ive just got to get through another year and a half of painting, and Im not sure Im going to do it. You can always ask the artist if hes interested in doing it. Its just a lot of noise to me. Ive had enough of that.

and detail, a sense of weight and structure that belies the aloof and impersonal look of the images surface. And its certainly no accident that the work is made of the stuff of an imagined world. Journeying through a foreign territory, it probes the affective regions of identity and identity politics, finding a way to look at the world from the other. More often than not, the photographs show people standing there in the middle of the street, looking directly at the camera, like a pair of bored inspectors, or like faces in a mirror. The only things that seem to matter are the people in front of the camera, and the curious pensive looks in their faces. Thats a world that is constantly changing, of course, and here the changes are for the better: They tell us that the world is beautiful and can be seen as such, and that it can be shared and understood by all. In this light, it is hard to look at these images of the underclass as anything but a testament to the freedom and possibilities of imagination.

, a lot of shadow, and a strong, solid shape. It has an air of a character drawing, a voice of a child, and a youthful sensibility. His is an art of innocence, not of knowledge, and its an art of the people, not the learned. He does not, however, seem to be making any claims on his subjects, or even on the world at large. His drawings are not painting; they are not drawings. This is not to say that they are not art; they are. The work isnt a matter of grand claim, of grandiose ego, but its a matter of little ego or ego. This is art. If it isnt art, it has to be something. A sense of private sense of selfhood is there, but only if the work is art, the attempt to be, or the realization of a quality in life. There is no sense of a sense of self in this work. It is not even about self-assertion, which is what ego claims to be, and which the church teaches is not a value. But the works intention is not self-assertion. It is to be a record of a kind of artistic expression, an act of public experience, and it is the primary, not only, source of that experience. But, it seems, the record isnt exactly what is supposed to be there—the image, or an image, or a statement about art. It is rather a message from someone who has never had the opportunity to speak, and who has no right to demand that the work he makes be, or ever can be, made in the way he claims he has. Perhaps its the fact that he cant, or doesnt want to be, understood.

, its way of being real. The story of the artist is what these photographs tell us of his life. He may be dead, but he leaves behind a body of work, of which this show is a part. The artist is himself, and he is alive, and will live again.

, a lot of reference to the actual world, a lot of black pencil line, a lot of black line, and it makes a lot of sense as a drawing. It is both a sketch of something and a drawing, and not a composition. Its a mix of the two. Its an art of reference, of drawing and painting, and its a good one.
