Although it is tempting to attribute a sense of humor to the works in this show, it is hard to argue with the distinction between the two. The first of these, all from 2016, are made of wooden blocks, which the artist has shaped into geometric shapes with a bronze cast. The other works are made of brass, which the artist has assembled into what looks like a kind of monstrous head. The difference is that the brass is decorated with a large number of small, rounded, and semi-transparent aluminum disks, and the bronze is painted in gold. The works allude to the things that go bump in the night—a head, a body, a skeleton, and a body part—and they all look as if they are made of wood. The effect is more comic than serious, and more playful than tragic. In both cases, the pieces are made of wood and made of bronze and painted in gold. The works are crude and elegant, and seem to belong to a moment in history when the most interesting objects were the most primitive.The show is a kind of mix-up of the past and the future.
