First, the art world itself is a little complicated: No matter how many people are in the art world, there is still no one for whom it is worth having any confidence. Second, in the art world, there is no such thing as a new identity, at least not a new sexuality. And third, in the art world, there is no single art theory. No matter how many art theories there are, there are also no new identities, either.

The exhibitions two centerpiece works are a pair of slim-hipped, round-headed, unclothed, and much larger-than-life-size fleshy constructions, one made of white plastic and the other of bamboo, that seem to be the result of an aggressive, homoerotic (if often darkly humorous) sexual fantasy.The bamboo constructions—five of which were exhibited in the gallery—resemble an early-twentieth-century abstract painting, but instead of a head, the bamboo is used to cover the figures. The form is so self-consciously primitive in its construction that it could be mistaken for an inversion of Abstract Expressionism. Kohns drawings and other forms of expression are full of grotesque characters, although they are not as grotesque as her sculptures. In the drawings, the figures are usually small, anthropomorphic animals whose heads are covered with oddly shaped bits of wood and wire.

A voice-over intones, Le phallic penis is literally a phallic penis, a tool used for the propagation of male sexual life. The fleshy, fleshy parts of Koonss body are displayed as a kind of graphic illustration of the penis and its underlying organs. (The words penis are also found in the title of the exhibition.) The panels are hung on the wall and are painted white, as a sort of funerary shroud, to conceal the fact that the works are both abstract and figurative. The white-painted panels are more ambiguous, more evocative than the white paint on which they are based. The white paint acts as a protective cover for the bodily parts, while the colored background creates a visual barrier between the two.The show was titled, in part, The Filigree of Art, and the text of the title is a text by Joseph Beuys, where he decries the pervert who, he says, has attempted to substitute for the sense of the universe by eliminating all sense of reality. The piece is written in both English and Japanese, and its titles are taken from the titles of books that describe the structure of the universe, such as Genesis or the Bible. The works themselves are based on the Western canon, from Leonardo da Vinci to the abstract painters of the Renaissance. These works are small in size, but the letters and text are large and bold. The show was organized around two subtexts: the common phallic nature of the human body as a metaphor for the physical universe and the hierarchical relationships of the world to the body. The very nature of the human body as a metaphor for the universe is an ancient one; the anthropomorphic, as Beuys calls it, is a modern one.

In the show, these interactions were highlighted through a series of colorful collages by artist-turned-producer Steven Miller that placed the playful artwork alongside the many graphic projects on view. (Only one of the collages was original, and the others were culled from sources that either suggested an established canon or were heavily indebted to one.)The first thing to notice was a monstrously obese, head-and-shoulders-length sculpture by British artist Jim Iserman: a giant, blood-and-guts-filled behemoth whose twisted back and arms were the result of a large surgical-grade screwdriver. Iserman, who hails from Birmingham, England, is also known for his self-torturing work, in which he constructs grotesque, if not morbid, creatures and figures with living parts. In one of the two works on view here, he constructed an object with a petrified heart that exploded when it was put in the air. The other was a grotesquely disfigured mannequin whose torso was made of vinyl and draped in a brown, sand-colored fabric. Iserman has a penchant for creating grotesque yet believable creatures, whether by applying his body parts or by reworking his drawings to make monstrous or anthropomorphic figures. The artist was represented here by a series of cartoons that he made about life in London in the 1970s. The main characters were played by Iserman and his two girlfriends, including a doll of a mannequin whose body is made of wood and lined with holes. (He looks just like a little doll.) Iserman created a miniature village, complete with handicraftsmen, a village-dweller, and a clown who looked just like his father.
