, and a series of watercolors, all with a subtext of snuff and feces, the painting style was something of an outgrowth of his early-80s street art. He has consistently used a style-specific visual vocabulary, such as the grid, as a way to make his work more accessible to an audience. The work of the late artist William Wegman, who curated the exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, provided a model for the artists own production. Wegmans paintings are filled with signs that are simultaneously banal and abrasive, but one can sense the artists pleasure in the fact that the signs are so vulgarly profane as to be almost comically grotesque. In the end, the exhibition was a testament to the fact that some artists have been doing work that is not strictly formal, and that has been shown to be more interesting in other contexts. In his earlier work, for instance, the artist was known for his raucous, often misogynistic humor and his references to mass culture. Now he seems to be addressing a wide range of topics, including the cultural politics of the body and the politics of art. With these and other works in the exhibition, he has transformed his practice from the relatively domestic to the public. He has also changed the relationship between artist and audience, and between the art world and the art world. His work now represents a kind of personal, public expression of his artistic position, and the result is a new public art.

. The exhibition is a reminder that the subtext of art is often a blind one. The art world is a harsh place, filled with idiots and moralists who think that making art is the ultimate virtue. Yet the exhibition gives the viewer a way to find the characters of the artists work in the works, and even to connect the works of art with the larger world. The exhibition is a great opportunity to explore the range of these artists and their work. The work of Marina Abramovic, Vija Celmins, and Paul McCarthy is more compelling than that of the other artists, who have also had a big impact on the development of this genre. The curators have succeeded in bringing together such disparate artists as a group of younger artists who do not appear to be each other, a group of artists who are all too familiar from the mass media, and a group of young artists who have not yet had a chance to be seen together.

. (In the end, the paintings did not look like drawings, as if the artist had reworked the drawings and added to them.) In these works, the artistic process is a matter of direct, nonverbal communication, and it is a productive one. It is no longer necessary to resort to the "something to be said about something else; one can speak and say it. The problem with the art is that it is not enough to merely critique, to remind us of the need for new forms of art.
