Saving Private Mythologies A group exhibition with different media A group of works with a variety of scales emancipated from traditional compositional or compositional values. In the early 70s, the term compositional value was applied to the mathematical values that were used to design formal or pictorial compositions of a certain type. The goal of the work in this show was to challenge the established values by combining them with a variety of other media. The artists who participated in this show were Jim Dines, Ken Price, and Thomas Reed. Dines, Price, and Reed have all used compositional values in their work, and they each have a unique vocabulary of media and styles. The major difference between Price and Reed is that Price has used the same compositional values in his paintings and works on paper. However, he has not used color as a compositional value; rather, he has employed an array of different hues and huesessions to indicate the color values. Price is a trained painter and his use of compositional values is clear. In each of his paintings, he has used the same compositional values and the same huesessions. His colors are different, but they do not change. The colors, usually saturated or muted, are closely spaced and closely spaced. The colors in one of the paintings on display here are monochromatic and have a somewhat muted, rather metallic, sheen. In another painting, the colors are more saturated and the hues are more pronounced. The color range in these paintings is also large, but not as large as in the earlier ones.
