These works are not, as the title indicates, water-based but are opaque, transparent, crystalline—in other words, as real as water itself. Just as water is a solid, solid state, the three-dimensional nature of the images in this show is one that is not something to be regarded as mere matter. The texture of the photographs, for example, is all the more amazing for being made from fabric. The fibers in the fabric have been dried, sewn back together, and then sewed again. The process is repeated over and over, in a continuous sequence of dilations that renders the fabric more and more slippery and more and more like glass. The result is that the images look as though they were painted on a surface that is not just a material but something to be held in the mind, an interior to be observed and to be protected. But theres a risk to the glass, to the transparency, that the glassiness can be glimpsed. As in the paintings, there is a layer of abstraction beneath the visual layers. A box with a brown lens was placed atop a dark, white sheet of glass in a darkened gallery and a photograph was visible on the wall. This form of emulsion made of blue paint was also used to cover the inside of a photograph of a glass aquarium with a miniature aquarium with a miniature aquarium.The seemingly random nature of the photographic images was enhanced by the use of color. Each of the photographs had been altered to include a different color in the installation, with the result that the photographs were presented in a sequence that, as a result, provided a visual record of the artists process. The photographic traces on the wall gave the installation a new and intriguing presence. The images were presented in the gallery at the same time as the photographic records. It is evident from this installation that the photographic evidence is a means of capturing an event.The presence of photographic evidence in this work is reinforced by the inclusion of one of the works in the exhibition, a miniature aquarium. The miniature aquarium has been painted black and white, has a painted back and bottom, and is covered by a sheet of glass, painted bright yellow, yellow, orange, green, blue, and black. The miniature aquarium also contains a small photograph of a miniature aquarium with a miniature aquarium and a photograph of a dark, greenish red glass aquarium. The latter is an effect that adds to the evocative quality of the small aquarium. The miniature aquarium is created by applying a high-contrast gray oil paint to a plastic sheet, which is then heated and heated again, resulting in a translucent acrylic.
