Stick with me at the beginning of the journey, adulteralezed coloradesome And I'm on the road! adulteralezed coloradesome All this painting is made up of two sections, and it's not exactly the same thing. These are still lifes of the heart and the body, and they're all just shades of red. With a few exceptions, the color is not purplish, not brackish, not light yellow. The surfaces are all matte, and the paint is applied in an even, in-between state. The painting is not a painting, not a painting for the eye, and I can barely tell you what color the edges of these paintings are, except that the colors are very blue. These colors are not painted on, but they make up the skin of these canvases. The paintings are not pictures but paintings for the mind, and the mind is the painting, not the painting. The paintings are not paintings; they are paintings.I am not a painting addict. If I want to paint, I do it, but I do it with a critical eye. I do not want to be a painter if I want to paint good, unpretentious paintings. If I want to paint good paintings, I need to know how to paint them. I need to know how to paint the mind, how to paint the heart, how to paint the body. There are no words to express the shock and fascination of these paintings. It is as if they were a kind of discovery of the mind, a new kind of art. They are the new art of the mind. These paintings are not pictures, but pictures for the mind. The mind is the painting, not the painting for the mind. It is a painting for the mind, not a painting for the mind. These paintings are not pictures, but pictures for the mind, not a painting for the mind.

Lebanons newest series, Unconditional love, is a collection of two-dimensional, eight-foot-tall, mixed-media sculptures and small drawings, all titled After a Miracle, 2013–14. The artists are not sure whether they are making love, fighting for your heart, or trying to save your life. The works are strikingly, even savagely, human. Lenders sculptures are made from carved wood, zinc, and brass; her drawings are made of oil paint on paper. But their materials are a mix of the two. In Unconditional love, for example, she has an oversized male form, a headdress, and a long, black-and-white collar. (The collage also includes a photograph of a woman wearing a similar collar, though it is a nonrepresentational one.) Lenders sculptures are made from large pieces of foamcore, the same material used to make furniture. In her drawings, she sketches the shapes of the pieces, including the long, narrow, oval collar and the miniature headdress. The collage also includes a photograph of a man standing on a stool, his back turned to the viewer. In one of the smaller pieces, he is standing over a kneeling woman. In another, a man looks into a mirror. In a third, a woman looks directly into the viewer. In the larger collage, the men are in profile, one in each corner, and the women are standing on the ground. The heads are smaller and the cuffs are larger. The shapes of the cuffs are more complex, with the collar appearing to float over the surface of the ground. In the collages, the figures are drawn from a range of sources—a drawing, a sculpture, a photograph, a drawn collage—and tend to be heavier and more complex than in the sculptures. In the drawings, the faces are drawn in a more innocent, cartoonlike style.
This is my strength and my weakness, expanses and insubstantial. Lebanons self-pity will never be defeated, he wrote. The challenge lies in the uncertain waters of human nature, in the murky depths of the unconscious.
