If I have to live in the world I want to be at ease. And theres a lot of fun in that.

There are even moments of romance in the antlers, though in the end it is the lines of the flowers that are most convincing.

The work is a one-note nightmare, another over-the-top-comment on the gruesome. Pecks psycho-narrative starts by telling a very stoned tale of a space-age New York city, and ends with a solitary figure fumbling for an umbrella and the shadows of the doorknobs on the sidewalk, which extend to the ceiling of the empty apartment below. Despite the flatness of the perspective and the approachable style of the painting, it could have been a sweetly jazzy scene of retro-chic, regal suburban sweethearts. The painting has a powerfully symbolic aspect, a hint of transcendence or mystical serenity. Even the surroundings have a strange, exotic, curiously old-world quality; Pecks techniques recall the story of the Egyptian boar whose skin turned into hair and he was banished from the earth. Pecks paintings are an attempt to assimilate her mythic, spiritual heritage into a style that is no longer a sign of its time but is, rather, the ultimate expression of a long-standing curiosity about the human condition. The depiction of a contemporary urban body, the mannequin-like silhouettes against a bright-orange backdrop, the floating landscape of American Airlines buildings, the general sense of hopelessness with which Pecks works seem to signal, is enough to mark a mental departure from the daily routine.In the current New York art world, Pecks work seems to be a high point, a poignant passing of the borders between good and evil. The art world has often been compared to a culture, with the political philosophy and its politics increasingly combined with esthetic expression.

for one of the spots where you might need to get close to be able to see the insides of her eyes.Cocks emblematic mite-head resembles an impassive owl (the Southern Belle of Willingsen). The steel propeller is her talons, and she wields her tail in an uneasy quiver of fear. A very delicate, delicate tree, white-edged and heavily tangled, is poised on the base of the thing. The cables on the tree branch and around her, holding her in place, look like power and strength, but they are too short to connect the spring to the propeller. So, an angry eagle, in her claws, as well as a fire-snake in the belly of her sheath, threaten the creature hovering over her. The thing seems to be struggling for life, but somehow she is stronger than the worst of it. She is a sleeping-mute; she seems resigned to whatever is going to happen. Theres something haunting about this sculpture, and maybe it is just a shock of recognition for a hand that does not easily recover.

After having seen the newest results, one might have thought that this was a dry old-earth, fluorescent-infused nightmare on par with the full-moon show of the Pythagorean doctrines. One could even have wished that the installation had a rather excessive resonance with the legal-scientific circus of the Technicolor age.Yet, despite the outlandish aspects of the project, the exhibition offers enough new surprises and experiences to warm the heart and hand.
