Like the other works in the show, the one on display here was made by hand and therefore, more subjectively challenging to read than the others. In the case of the two-part piece, the blue-green brushstrokes that repeat the shapes of the stars and stripes of the background are more difficult to read than the white-outstrokes. It is as though the painter was trying to read the line, but couldnt.The two works in the center of the gallery, which are titled after the seasons, are both titled after a particular place in the United States. The series of red, yellow, and blue strokes is a repeated sequence of the same shape but in different colors. The colors of the ground are different, too, and the result is as though the line is being drawn in a different color. The only difference is that the shape is not repeated, but is shaped by the ground, like a pattern of stripes or a hat. Ladies and gentlemen, a new school, says a piece of paper taped to the wall. On it, the title of a group of works by the New York–based artist Elan Demuth, entitled New School, is inscribed: FINE ART. What we are, what we are, is beautiful. The work is a synthesis of Demuths own art-historical references, in which the New York City school, the New York Public School, and the New York Academy of Design are all represented. He makes no attempt to pigeonhole the New School, but rather to explore its possibilities. Demuths subjects are the New York City and its residents, and in particular his fellow New Yorkers. He has identified them as the most beautiful of New Yorkers, but he also questions the status of their existence.
