The back page of Art Review is unresolved and this article must be an excellent review of all contemporary art. Who is the new Basquiat? Is AI the new Basquiat? Is he the new Basquiat? Does Basquiat still matter? __________ The magazine cover, which featured a portrait of Godfather John Clinton, ran for three months in the April, 1987, issue. It was published the same week the artist disappeared from the United States. Within the magazine the words Godfather Bob, a prominent image in art, appeared—as if the cover had been taken from an old Bob Dylan commercial—and on the cover itself was written the title of the April, 1987, issue. In the month before his disappearance, the article appeared in this magazine. The cover, an oblique reference to pop culture, featured a picture of the artist in full top hat. The cover itself contained a large image of the artist surrounded by his friends in the artist's signature colors. The pictures text was written in the style of a commercial copy and was accompanied by a quote from Dylan: I know all these words, and all the words you use in every picture you see, because every copy you see, you know. The cover itself also featured a silhouette of the artist's hand, accompanied by a copy of the full cover. The text read, They dont know, they dont care, they cant handle, they dont give a damn what you do. Of course the two aspects of the cover were the same, as one was extended to the photographs and the other was extended to the words. Dont you understand the pain of living life with your parents, your uncles, your uncles in the same house, you should be going home? This is a wry commentary on the typical image of the "new look cool. This is a cynical view of the art world that has not only become a standard of analysis, but an embarrassment of the artist and his art. By declaring himself the godfather, Clinton is replacing himself with the godfather, the artist, the magazine cover, the cover itself, the magazine cover, the artist, the book cover, and the magazine cover.

The back page of Art Review is unresolved and this article must be an excellent review of all contemporary art. Who is the new Basquiat? Is AI the new Basquiat? Is he the new Basquiat? Does Basquiat still matter? Leonardos work is committed to both the popular and the intellectual; in his art, the popular means such as upending conventions and codes, and the intellectual the creative process of telling a story. His work has always been at once politically valid and ironic; from the moment of his conception of the new grammar, it could be read as a critique of the media, capitalism, and the myth of the monochrome. The recent work reveals an intellectual commitment to an art that is both popular and intellectual, and yet as always, the work is free of the same dogma, the same iconofcism. The new works of Larsen and Madsen show an exploration of alternative ways of organizing forms of representation and relation of perception. In the new works they explore a new kind of figurative style, one that is not one of traditional architecture but of the imagination. In the beginning, this painting of the two main figures of Basquiat, for example, resembles an enlarged model of a house in a nineteenth-century painting, but they later develop the same pictorial vocabulary and use a similar material. The major difference is that Basquiat does not use an endless series of colors and patterns; his color-trick plays on the illusions of color. By the early twentieth century, many of the paintings with the same basic format were already in production; today, every painting has an iconographic and pictorial history. The importance of what they are painting is revealed in the later works. The paintings of the 40s, for example, are based on the notion that it is possible to make abstraction become sculpture. They explore a new kind of form. However, in contrast to the old abstraction, which consisted of the suspension of the figure, the new forms are determined by the laws of gravity and light. The new forms, such as the waveform, the funnel, or the solar or the lunar phases, are made of thin and solid materials.

. . .Was it worth the same risk to get your body into an emergency room? Basquiat could have become a joke. As an artist he has become a joke. His fashions are so polished they cannot be any more sophisticated than the rest of the art world, but his custom-made outfits are so style-conscious, like the rest of his clothing, that they all but forgot that he is an artist. Basquiat works with a pure, unadulterated energy and passion for products; he has found an art form that will serve him forever.
