abstract women, give the painting tension and density. atmosphere painting is strange and beautiful – the landscape is largely bluish, a soft haze in which sky and water and vegetation merge and by which the masterfully drawn figures are delicately overcast. Nebula explosions are the result of the discordant noise of the brush, which is a kind of instant poetry. But the paintings are complex, and the works have a richness of detail and a lot of color to them. And their fascination is in the mysterious and fantastic. Theres a sense of floating space, and of being in the same space as the sky, the water, and the figures. The paintings are all pretty dashes of color, a bit like a lot of comic book art, but they are also huge, and they are filled with a lot of moving parts. And they are all painted in a style that is obviously influenced by the best of Abstract Expressionism, but with a little bit of color-handling and an almost abstract quality. This is a style that has a lot of history to it, but it is also very fresh. There is a lot of color, but it is not overdone, and it isnt so hard to get under the surface, and to paint with, and not so much to paint with. The paint is applied with a sense of being able to feel the color on your skin, and it is a sensuous, even sensual kind of paint. But the paint isnt quite as sensuous as you might think, and there is a lot of color in the paintings that isnt quite as vibrant as it could be. And there are a lot of white and a lot of black. The colors arent as brilliant as they might be, and the white is just there, and the blacks are more clearly defined, but not as strongly defined as the whites. The black isnt very strong either. The blacks are more a reflection of the palette, and the whites are just there, but they arent strong or as bright as the whites. And the whites are a reflection of the sky, but they arent strong or as bright as the whites, and they look rather like the sky in the paintings.
abstract women, give the painting tension and density. atmosphere painting is strange and beautiful – the landscape is largely bluish, a soft haze in which sky and water and vegetation merge and by which the masterfully drawn figures are delicately overcast. Nebula explosions vernacularly reveal a sharp, self-contradictory colorist. In the paintings of Jane Wilson, the edges of the canvas are shallow and almost translucent, the center is black and the colors are brighter and more vibrant. In one of the paintings, a small, smooth-edged, bright yellow rectangle is crossed over by a thick, long, sinuous line of white paint. In other paintings, the line of color is flat and the surface is a thick, light blue. The surface is a scintillating, brilliant light blue. This is a fine painting, and one of the most naturalistic I have ever seen.Wilson paints with a small brush, so that the brushstroke is secondary to the painting. In some paintings, the brushstroke is a smooth, repeated line of color, like a small brushstroke in a ball of crayon. In others, the brushstroke is a thin, sharply defined line of color, like a line of twine. In still others, the brushstroke is a wide, dark line of color, like a thick, wide brushstroke, but on the smaller side. In the paintings, the brushstroke is a bright, bright, open line of color, like a point of a knife blade in a jar. It is a line that cuts through space, that holds the canvas together, that holds the paintings surface, and that cuts through time. It is a line that, in its elasticity, makes the canvas a pure material, a material of possibilities.Wilson paints on a thick, light, thickly painted surface, a surface that has the same lightness as the canvas it covers. The paintings surface is a rich, dense, thickly painted surface, a surface that is both light and heavy, heavy and light, and that is both a surface and a space. It is a surface that gives birth to ideas, ideas that are both abstract and material, material and paint.

Nebula explosions are the dominant feature. It is difficult to know what to make of the paintings: are they a map of the cosmos, or a painting of a nebula? The nebula is a giant gas cloud, and the landscape is a field of grass. What is it? It is a painting, perhaps, but its edges are all wrong, and its colors are all wrong. It is a painting, and one can only think of it as a map of the cosmos. It is a painting, but it is not a painting. It is a map, and its edges are wrong. Its colors are wrong, and its colors are wrong. The paintings are not.The problem with nebula paintings is that they are too good. The nebula is a good painting, but it is too good. I am not suggesting that the nebula is necessarily bad. It is beautiful, but it is a beautiful painting, and it is good. The nebula is a beautiful painting, but its edges are too narrow. The edges are fine. The painting is good. The nebula is beautiful, but its edges are too narrow. It is too good. It is too good. It is too good. abstract women, give the painting tension and density. atmosphere painting is strange and beautiful – the landscape is largely bluish, a soft haze in which sky and water and vegetation merge and by which the masterfully drawn figures are delicately overcast. Nebula explosions  are an absolute no-no in this show, but they are especially beautiful in this context. The paintings are made up of layers of paint, which are applied in large sheets and splashed over the canvas, sometimes even in a few places at the top and bottom. The colors are generally pale, the brushwork is light and delicate, and the surface is raked with a flat, undilluminated color. This surface is then painted over in the manner of a relief, but in the best of the paintings the paint is brushed over with a brush in a single stroke of color. The brushstrokes are sparse, and there are no obvious marks of the hand. The strokes are like the spongy, dry, cool surface of a watercolor, but there are no surface textures, no blobby areas of the canvas. The strokes are small, almost vanishing, and they are repeated in a few places. The brushstrokes are small, and the marks of the hand are almost absent, and they are all the same size, which makes them feel almost life-size. The strokes are light and airy, like the airbrush strokes. They are like a gentle rain that has not just stopped but is in a state of total collapse. They are like the light that blows into the night sky, or the light of a sun that has not yet set. The strokes are like a firestorm that has not yet started, or a comet that has not yet been seen. They are like a stream of water in a still pond, or a river flowing through the rocks. They are like the light that shines on the sea, or the light of a street lamp on the street. They are like a cloud that has not yet broken up, or the light of a night sky that has not yet been completely obscured. The strokes are like a breath of air, or a light that has not been extinguished, or a sun that has not yet risen.

Nebula explosions !!! are the subject of the paintings, but they are not only a composition for the book but a really wonderful thing. The big works are a great deal more sophisticated and full of emotions. I have not seen many of these since I saw them in a group show of paintings by Paul Huxley at the Art Center in Pasadena in 1965. They are wonderful, but one has only to look at them closely to realize the source of the sensation.
