The most interesting aspect of this show is the fact that the artist has been able to draw connections between things that have been marginalized and things that are not, while having no fear of the sort of blasphemy that can be taken as blasphemy. Homogeneity draws on the power of the object and the object draws on the power of the artist. Homogeneity is a choice, a gesture that can be taken as one can take a sign, one can take a picture, and one can take a note and move on, and that in the process of doing so it is a very creative gesture. Homogeneity is the act of drawing and drawing on the object, which in turn draws on the power of the artist, which in turn draws on the power of drawing.
Salt and sugar. Drawing connection between Homogeneity and capitalism. The dead-end quality of these drawings is reminiscent of the work of John Baldessari, only with a more gestural and less abstract vocabulary. This is not a result of the drawn image having become another form of art—that is, the history of art as a propaganda instrument. In fact, the relations between the figures in Homogeneity are so controlled that any kind of individual development is ruled out. The relations are endless, and the figures are reduced to their lowest common denominator, the four-fifths of the drawing, a richly textured surface that can be analyzed only by the viewer, who is restricted to the works title.Homogeneity: The Present, 1993, by Ben Zogbaums is a graphic ode to the present. A series of 10 small drawings, each titled Homogeneous, is made up of two rectangular panels, divided by a double-curved line at the upper right. The drawing below the line is based on a model of a place that Zogbaums has visited in Rome. The model is a re-creation of the Italian baroque palace that once stood on the site of the Palazzina della Castellata, and it reflects the present-day facade of the Palazzina. In the drawing to the left of the double-curved line, the model is an enlarged reproduction of the Palazzina. In the right panel the reference is to a painting by Brice Mardens. This painting was not included in the show, but the drawing to the left shows a small version of the painting that was used as a base for the model. The reference to Mardens work is made all the more explicit by the artist's use of a metronome to measure the time of the drawing and the drawing's placement in the paintings.
Homogeneity is a social, economic, and cultural necessity. Homogeneity is a matter of division, one that facilitates communication. Homogeneity is also a matter of difference, a difference which is a matter of difference. Homogeneity is an ideal. Homogeneity is a necessary condition. Homogeneity is a necessity that is available to all.
