The main attraction was the way that the paintings were torn apart, with some pieces floating in space, others simply sticking out of the surface. This division seems to echo the imagery of the fallen woman, as in a recent work by László Moholy-Nagy, which shows a womans face with a tear in her eye. The paintings are a picture of self-destruction, an ode to the beauty of death. These paintings are often in the shape of a heart, but one of them is blue, and another is red. The broken, torn edges of these works are the broken heart, a symbol of the transformation of nature into art.Although Latham has often been seen as a Romantic painter, this show emphasized his abstractions and the larger conceptual roots of his work. Latham is well-known for his political paintings and for his work with imagery from childhood, but the show focused on his oil paintings, which were often the only ones shown in the show. These paintings have an ancient quality; they resemble fragments of a mosaic. The landscapes are made of multiple images, ranging from ancient Egypt to fantasy landscapes, and they are inspired by Lathams fascination with nature in his childhood. In this show, Latham showed that he is still a painter, but one who can combine and recombine images and motifs, as he has done in the past. He has done this well in the past, with the majority of his paintings consisting of only one or two images. The paintings are usually divided into sections; the fragmented images are displayed on the left and right and the whole right half is empty. In the past, Latham has shown a certain fascination with the Indian landscape, particularly its vastness and its centrality to the work.

at the entrance to the show, or a row of miniature pink cups sitting on a table, all the same. The potpourri of colors, small and large, in the foreground and background, creates a dazzling counterpoint to the subject matter in the center. We are not looking at the work of a childrens artist; we are looking at a feast of images, of objects, of people, who make up a collective visual work that shows us that we cannot get rid of our innermost desires, that we are not immune to the charms of desire, the eroticism of it all. And they are not imaginary images, created by the artist but only those we imagine ourselves to be. The rest of the picture, like the food, is just as real.

bright colorful teapot kettle fruit —an item more familiar to our own consumerist tastes. This isnt the first time the show has included a pot, but it is the first to be as utilitarian as it is. (It is also the first pot to be made in the United States, and the first made in a domestic product like coffee.) In this case, the works utilitarian/conceptual aspect was underlined by the white-tiled floor on which the pot sat. Though this installation, like the others, seemed mostly casual, it also, in the end, reinforced the artists sense of aesthetic satisfaction.The paintings in the show were made with a potter as its base material, and they were made with a similar pot as its support. In all three cases, the pots are small, and the paintings are small, too. The pots and the paintings are made with a similar technical skill, which is one of the works of art. But here, the potter was made into a decoration, and so it was a fetish, and the paintbrush is a toy. The colors in the paintings, with their use of the palette-knife and pastel palette, seem as if they were not only colors for children, but also signs of artistic genius—the potters palette, the brush-knife, the palette knife. The paintings themselves, therefore, seem to be a catalogue of idiosyncratic constructions of what can be read as fine art.The potter is a vessel that can be used, but also carries a charge of being a work of art. For all its utilitarian function, it is also a work of art, and is not simply another vessel but an artistic statement, an artistic statement that cannot be taken as mere decoration. The work is a sculpture, and it is also a sculpture that can be used and re-used, and that can be made to reflect an artistic statement.
