Is Anselm Kiefer a good painter? Is there anything left to do, one might ask, as we approach the forty-year anniversary of his death? His paintings of the 80s are surprisingly bright, with blue-green, green, and red-orange blobs and points of intense color. They are at once vibrant and still, and they appear to have been made in a leisurely, spontaneous way. That this is so surprising, so unexpected, seems to be an essential characteristic of his work. The paintings are not quite as saturated with color as his earlier work, but they are not quite so subdued either. This is not necessarily a bad thing: It is as if Kiefer were trying to make his paintings a bit more palatable. At the same time, they are not quite so much a matter of subject matter as an emphasis on surface, and the works seem to be still in a state of transition, as the artist puts it. Kiefer wasnt always so accomplished, but in the end, hes a good painter. His works are not always as good as they are, but they are not bad.Kiefer is a painter who wants to paint, and he wants to paint well. He wants to paint, to paint, to paint. He wants to paint, to paint, to paint. His paintings are not just paintings. They are paintings in the best sense of the word: they are not just paintings, but paintings in the best sense of the word. They arent just paintings, they are paintings. He isnt really painting them, he is painting the paintings. He isnt just painting, hes painting. He isnt just painting, hes painting. He isnt just painting, hes painting. He isnt just painting, hes painting. He isnt just painting, hes painting. He isnt just painting, hes painting. He isnt just painting, hes painting. Hes painting, hes painting. Hes painting, hes painting.

Is Anselm Kiefer a good painter? Well, no, not necessarily, but not necessarily either. For if the paintings were better, there would be no reason for Kiefer to paint them. But since they are, it is because they are not. Kiefer has never been a good painter. He has never been able to paint the things that are actually important to him, the things that he paints with a brush, and which he is able to do are so carefully avoided as to be almost invisible. Kiefer avoids all that is useless, that is, he avoids any attempt to make paintings that are really paintings. They are, at best, simple paintings. His paintings, therefore, are what you might call paintings in the Freudian sense of the word. They are, in the best sense, paintings of the unconscious. But they are not paintings. They are not paintings. Kiefer has never been a good painter. Is Anselm Kiefer a good painter? What else could he possibly be? The question, of course, is how he became a good painter. A few years ago he had to pay a price for his frank talk, which was in fact all-right, because it was also a way of making art, and his paintings are about art. But this is not the only way to make art; its a mistake to think that Kiefer is simply a good painter, because his paintings are about art. And the fact that he makes paintings is not enough to negate his paintings, though they may have been the only way to make art in the 70s, when the paintings were almost always as thin as the paper they were on. In the end, the works are more about art. But the paintings are not art; they are about making art. Thats it.Kiefer has been making paintings since the early 70s, and the paintings are not only about art but about the art of making art. They are not about making art. Is Anselm Kiefer a good painter? The answer, at least for me, is no. I think he is an excellent painter, but one who does not paint well. His paintings are of an uncertain quality, and they look as if they could be better than the paintings they are. Some of the pictures look like drawings, others like paintings, and some are paintings with all the polish of a brush and a trace of the paint. These are all very small paintings, but they are not insignificant. In the end, however, this exhibition is a good show, and one which offers a useful overview of some of the developments in American art. It is also an excellent one which is important to the present generation of artists. It is important to know that there are artists in America who are thinking and working in the same ways as Anselm Kiefer, but it is not important to know where they are.It is important to know that the current work of Anselm Kiefer is, as far as I know, the only work of art which has been accepted as art by an official authority, and which is not a representation of an individual. This is important, for it is the very quality of the work which makes it important to know where it is, and to accept it as art. It is important to know that the works of Anselm Kiefer are not simply a continuation of the work of artists who have been around for a long time, but are in fact the direct result of his work with the highest artistic standards. It is important to know that these paintings are not only pictures but also objects. Anselm Kiefer is interested in the relationship between painting and the object. He is also interested in the relationship between the work of art and society. In the end, what is important is not the fact of the works being pictures, but the fact that they are pictures.
