For the first time in the history of art, the celebrated Danish artist Lars Nittve has created a work with which to engage with his audience. This installation, Subtly Trousers, 2010, is a room-size installation in which a series of six large-format photographs, all taken in the same place and at the same time, was placed on the wall. They are of the same size and framing, and are mounted on aluminum poles that have been cut to size. At the same time, the images are made of aluminum and have a smooth, even surface, suggesting that they were made by a machine rather than a camera. In the photograph Skulptur (Sculpture), 2010, a man wearing a white-collared shirt, blue jeans, and black slacks stands on a small, hard-to-find table, on which a large, white-collared shirt sits, leaning against the table. The man holds a glass of water and a plate of macaroni cheese. He looks toward the viewer, but there is no sign of a reply. The scene is uncomfortably intimate, and there is no indication that the guests will respond. The only hint of movement is provided by the shadows cast by a few tacks that are embedded in the wood. They are the remnants of a previous performance, which Nittve had planned for the occasion.The artist has said that this work is about the intimacy of the exhibition space and its relationship to the audience. Nittve has taken the idea of a work of art being viewed as an object and made it a process of investigation. The photos take their place among the objects in the gallery, as well as among the objects in the gallery itself. They are also part of the installation, and their position in it, as the photographs are, is also important. The same can be said for the photographs.
