His world is one of misery and discontent.The experience of Knoebels new series of collages was a typical Knoebel. The images ranged from the more common scenes of the gutter and the bar to the more unusual ones of the upper middle class—men of the upper class whose income is higher than theirs.

He has a distinctly photographic sense of what is still in the dark, an inability to move on or avoid it and has a real sense of the surface of his work. He is not interested in pretending that he is above it, as he does in his early work with crayons. He knows what he has, but his motives are less than pure. His technique is not analytical, but experimental. When he is caught in his travails, his attempts at getting rid of it will be lame, but when he gives it another chance he must be good.
