How is surrealism portrayed and what feelings does it comunicate? In a small corner of the gallery, a giant mauve rectangle made of faux wood and glue—the artist had covered the canvas with layers of brown paint, a material that she then glued onto the canvas, creating a mosaic of abstracted space. The work was a meditation on the idea of the deadpan, and its relevance to the present.The exhibition also included a series of small drawings, all from 2012, that reimagined the typical form of an ordinary object, such as a cabinet or a suitcase. The drawings were inspired by the kinds of things that we use, such as books, computers, or even the inside of our homes. This exhibition, too, was a meditation on the idea of the deadpan. The only one that was not based on an actual object was a wall drawing, which was made up of four panels—a small square of wood, a black square, a square of glue, and a single piece of paper. The entire work was covered with a thick layer of brown paint, creating a sort of architectural scaffolding. The work, too, was covered with layers of glue, creating a kind of collage that lent the whole piece a kind of unfinished look.The works in the exhibition were originally made in 2010, and they all took the form of simple objects that had been painted with the same yellow paint as the paint on the paintings. The images of these objects were taken from magazines and newspapers, and the glue used was a kind of natural glue, created by a local artisan. The results were a kind of surrealism, in which the material was juxtaposed with a visual representation of an object that was not real. The glue in one of the drawings was applied to a piece of paper, while in another it was applied to a table. The objects in these drawings were created in 2010 and displayed in the same way as the paintings.
