Poetics of Encryption explores how artists picture our relationship with inscrutable tech, through three thematic frames. Black Site, Black Box, and Black Hole. These metaphors address the way encrypted objects are negotiated in the course of everyday life, and the way they order concepts of embodiment models for where an intelligent human is placed vis a vis the realm of digital secrets and/or hidden mechanisms.

These metaphors address the way encrypted objects are negotiated in the course of everyday life, and the way they order concepts of embodiment models for where an intelligent human is placed vis a vis the realm of digital secrets and/or hidden mechanisms. The first of these frames is a dark room, with a large, black-and-white photograph of a man lying in a pool surrounded by a collection of keys. The second frame, a color photograph, shows the same man lying in a pool surrounded by a collection of keys. The first of these works, Black Site, Black Box, and Black Hole, all 2016, are made up of two-dimensional objects, such as a laptop, a mobile phone, or a computer, that are encrypted with a combination of mathematical and linguistic algorithms. The second work, Black Site, Black Box, and Black Hole, all 2016, is made up of three-dimensional objects, such as a cell phone, a camera, or a computer, that are encrypted with a combination of mathematical and linguistic algorithms. The third is a series of photographs of the same objects but presented in black and white, in a format that evokes the black-and-white process of photography. In the series Black Site, Black Box, and Black Hole, all 2016, the photographs are taken from a single camera and reproduced in a grid format. The grid is created by the computer that creates the grid, and the resulting images are then printed on the wall. The works are all framed by a white sheet of paper, which is sandwiched between two black-and-white sheets. The paper is also covered with black tape, and the grid is created by the computer that creates the grid, and the resulting images are printed on the wall. The first frame, Black Site, is a grid of four panels, each of which is composed of two parts: a mirror image of the first panel is mirrored, and the second panel is a mirror image of the second panel. The first of these works, which was installed in the gallery, was a black box that contained a digital version of a photograph of a handprint on a wall. The photograph, taken from a security camera, shows the handprint on a white wall in the center of the room. The handprint is a type of fingerprint, and the image is encrypted. The handprint is the image of the hand, the fingerprint of the hand, and the handprint is the fingerprint of the fingerprint, the fingerprints of the fingerprint. This fingerprint is the key. These metaphors address the way encrypted objects are negotiated in the course of everyday life, and the way they order concepts of embodiment models for where an intelligent human is placed vis a vis the realm of digital secrets and/or hidden mechanisms. For example, the title of the show, which opens with a series of images of a single digit, Black Site, references a complex network of cryptographic devices that are used to secure and decrypt data. The title also evokes the way in which the digital realm is a space of physical and psychic barriers. Black Site, Black Box, and Black Hole. A black box is a device that can be used to encrypt data and to decrypt the underlying code. In the case of Black Site, it is a device that can be used to decrypt data and to decrypt the underlying code.
