a show of oil stick drawings and peculiar medium-sized sculptures. whatchamacallits. the artist seems to. there is a simplicity and humor but not jokes. No punchlines. The narratives, if they are narratives, do not loop, but instead move and change in a slow-moving sequence, like a series of movies. We see a man talking about his work, and then we see the artist talking about himself. I think that this is a very playful, even comic, way of dealing with art, and one that Ive seen in a number of shows. Its not just the imagery that is striking but the way the pieces move. In some pieces, the pieces are suspended from the ceiling by wires that are attached to the wall, in others, the pieces are suspended from the floor by metal bars that are attached to the wall. The paintings are framed by the same type of wires and bars. The paintings are in fact all in the same size and the same width. The paintings are hung on the wall. occur as the artist reveals and erases his way to a climax. The work is just a series of signs. The artist is a very funny person, but he is not too clever. He is not so much an artist as he is a sign-maker. He does not elaborate on his works, nor does he reveal the secret meaning of his signs. He is one of the few artists whose work I consider to be completely sincere, although one who is also an artist.
