This is still fun to do art with rainbows and unicorns. But these are for the most part superficial aspects of a hobby. If you were to show this in a gallery, you might have to explain why your work would be taken as some sort of kitsch item, even though it is perfectly harmless. Theres nothing kitsch about a rainbow or unicorn, though, so what is this art? In fact, I wonder if there isnt something rather sinister behind these images, an undertone of sadomasochism? The rainbow, for example, could be a good-looking, straight-faced, pale-eyed, bald-headed, male-headed figure with an open, cartoon-striped, snot-nosed mouth. In another drawing, the unicorns are both male and female, but the man is a wan, gold-coated, bewigged-haired, halo-eyed, red-headed man with a long horn on his head, a giant penis for a dick, and a sad, pathetic, big-breasted face. In another drawing, the unicorn is a massive, double-horned, pink-headed, female-headed, bare-breasted, monstrous-looking, stuffed-animal male with a huge orange-throat phallus on his hip. The only thing that doesnt seem quite right here is the fact that there are unicorns and unicorns, but this is only because they are so insignificant as to be barely noticeable. But the drawings are fine, and it is hard to believe that the artist has nothing else in mind. I have seen these drawings a few times, and I am not sure they have anything to do with the subject. The thing is, I dont really know what the subject is. Its as if the artist has been asked to show something that isnt there. He has done that, and the results are not good. I dont mean to suggest that these drawings are bad, but I do think that they are rather uninteresting.

These are not art to be looked at, but rather art to be experienced, with no preconceptions about what is good or bad or imagined. This is not to say that the artist has no responsibility for the art that he makes; it is simply that he has chosen to be the subject of such experience, and he has chosen to be the one who determines how that experience is experienced.

This is still fun to do art with rainbows and unicorns. And it is even better to do it in a strip bar, with a few old-fashioned television sets and a stack of magazines. As with the original, theres no way to know the outcome without risking a run-in with the bouncer. Theres no way to tell whether the rainbow is a real rainbow or a fake one, and the unicorns are more likely to be hanging out with the bands than are the band. The point is that they can be art if they arent so dumb and so tired.

The artist in question is the artist, and the rainbow is still a rainbow, but now it is a rainbow with a different color and a different function. The unicorn is a kind of unicorn, and the function is to be used. But what does that mean? The unicorn is still a unicorn—so how do we use it? Do we paint it? In the end, it is the artist who is the unicorn, and his art is the unicorn. It is an extremely noble endeavor, but one which he must take on faith. He must be convinced that he is a true artist, and he must be convinced that the artist is an artist. He must take the confidence of the artist and put it in his hand.
