In these works, Smith uses a brush that is more subtle, a brush that can be used to convey a sense of light and color. Her brushstrokes are a part of her technique, and they are not used to create an illusion of depth. The two poets used a word that forms part of Lippards famous structure of thought, in which the object of a thought is to be, to be, and to be what the other means to be. The title of the show and the poems, Birds in Motion, as well as the paintings, remind us that we can think about art in a similar way. The paintings, on the other hand, remind us that we can also think about other kinds of things.
