Result #1

This was an ironic reflection on the relationship between the artists and the audience. In my opinion, this was a case of the artists becoming the audience, and the audience becoming the artists.

The smile is an oppressive signifier, a mechanism by which I am told what to think. I am told what to think, and I am told what to think, because I am a white male. This is the context in which my art is intended to engage. A study in how to think, a study in how to smile, it is a study of how to be a man.

It is as if my own self-imposed self-reflexivity is being forced to conform to the expectations of others, and the real self is making a mockery of the idealized image of the other. The self-empowering strategy of the self-conscious artist is replaced by the self-conscious recognition of others as self-empowered. But this recognition is necessarily provisional: The self-empowerment strategy of the self-empowering artist is often accompanied by a sense of insecurity about the possibility of ever achieving self-empowerment. The self-empowerment strategy of the self-empowering artist is thus a method of self-recognition, a recognition of ones own authority and, potentially, of ones own power.
