Deby, on the whole, has the same idea. She is a self-aware, self-revelatory, self-possessed little witch who knows that, in spite of her insistence that she is a gift, she is only a stupid little witch, and she knows that she is also a gift. Its a shitty, negative thought, but one that deby doesnt have to think about too much. She is no worse for the experience than any other kind of reader, and, indeed, she has a lot of the pleasure of reading in her own book. A lot of it. Her own book is self-contained and self-contained and self-contained and self-contained, and she doesnt need to worry about the reader or the reader of hers. She is a writer, and she is a writer, but she doesnt need to be the artist, the writer, the writer in order to be an artist. She is an artist, but not a writer. She is an artist who does not need to be a writer, who doesnt need to be a poet, a poet, a storyteller, a painter. She is an artist who doesnt need to be a storyteller, a poet, a painter. She is an artist who doesnt need to be a storymaker, a storymaker, a storymaker. She is an artist who is self-aware, self-possessive, self-critical, self-assured, self-aware. Okay. So, now deby ask john why im doing thin? Are deby fucking mad? What is a deby? , 1999, a print of a text that John Debies used to read aloud to people on the street, presents a playful yet devastatingly serious look at the problems that affect the world. The work, which is based on a quote from the famous speech by Alexander the Great, gives an overview of the problem of our time, and how we can find a way out of it.Debies work is rooted in the idea that we are a system that can make every kind of thing work at any scale. His most recent exhibition at Georges Pompidou was titled, after a quote from Plato, I want you to know that I believe in you . . . I want you to know that I love you . . . I want you to know that I care about you . . . I want you to know that I am sorry. The title is an expression of the artists love for his subject, which was also his concern for the world around him. Debies paintings show the world in the most varied and complex possible way, alluding to the many possible places that we can live and work in the world. In the past, Debies work often featured colorful, chaotic worlds in his drawings. Now, he has given us a much more stable and predictable world. This time, he has incorporated the most current technologies in his work, such as video, photography, and computer. Debies video pieces, for example, depict an endless array of people, all of whom have come to life, and even now, the world has not yet caught up with them. But Debies hope is that by continuing to work with these technologies, we can maintain the same confidence that made us human in the first place. But the same is true for all of Debies paintings: These are works of art, in no sense finished. Debies work is not finished, and the future will not be.
