A programmer writes a sentence into a text file, and receives a digital copy of it. The program then searches through the text and returns with the original, and, in the process, a piece of the human mind. The artist, a Chinese artist, has, by permission, been employed by the China Film and Television Academy, and is showing in his country. It is a small but quite beautiful school, and was built around the teachings of Tzu-Yen. Its now housed in a building on the outskirts of Shanghai, the old fortress of the Hao school. At the center is a great hall of film and video equipment, which the students are learning and practicing in a mock-outbuilding of artificiality. (The film and video studios are housed in the old factory building, a former cotton factory, which is now a kind of shopping complex, with stores and art galleries, and an enormous market. In the courtyard is the newly renovated theater, which shows only the work of Chinese actors.) The students are learning a very Western form of Chinese philosophy, which is as eclectic as the work of many Western thinkers. The Chinese have no concept of time, and they cannot conceive of it as a fixed, irreversible process. They do not believe in a fixed point of view, for they are fascinated by the idea of time as a limitless space. They do not believe that time can be measured or measured backward. In this school, the students are studying Chinese philosophy in a vacuum, in a vacuum that is totally foreign to the Chinese sense of time and space. In this school they are studying the concept of space as space without a space. This is not the same as a vacuum of time, a vacuum of space, as the Chinese call it. This is a vacuum of vision.

The documentary image, the real thing, has a memory of its own. After a long time, it begins to look more and more like the dream image. In his book Reassessing the Image, the late scholar Daniel Richter explains, The subject of photography is the unhistorical image of the world. It is the image that photographs themselves make. The image of a very good, very beautiful, very strange, very strange world, a world that has a past and a future and that will be remembered in the future and which is always to be experienced anew. Richters originality is the present, the light in which the world and the images of it are seen. But the images of the world are now almost a decade old, and we no longer recognize them in the original form. The old dream image, then, is no longer the image of the world as it was when it was taken, but rather the image as it is now. In this respect, Richters interest in the medium is a forerunner of the present-day esthetic of photography. It is the medium, the image, that reveals its origin, it is the image that reveals the subject, the scene, the object of vision. Richter continues this line of questioning. He has asked whether photography is really a medium, a means of seeing. And so we ask why the old dream image is being reintroduced, not because it is a symbol of the old vision, but because it is the image of a new vision, a new vision of the world. The reason is that the subject is no longer the object of vision, but rather the image itself. The photograph is a photographic image, but not an object of vision. The object of vision is a photograph; the photograph is a photograph. The photograph is not a photograph, but a photograph. The photograph is the object of vision. The object of vision is a photograph, but not the object of vision.

There is no mystery / suspense, there is only a blank stare. What has happened? / Can I enter the line of the black hole? / Are you there? / The mask has gone. / It is black and white and blue and red. / I have seen the mask, it is the only one, and I am a man, and the mask has gone. / I have seen the mask, the mask has gone. / I have seen the mask, the mask has gone. / I have seen the mask, the mask has gone. / I have seen the mask, the mask has gone. / I have seen the mask, the mask has gone. / I have seen the mask, the mask has gone. / I have seen the mask, the mask has gone. / I have seen the mask, the mask has gone. / I have seen the mask, the mask has gone. / I have seen the mask, the mask has gone.

As in the various areas of Las Vegas, I was trying to find a connection between the anemia of the mystics and the world of technology. I had to go to the desert with the aim of discovering a psychological glitch in the system, a disfiguring of the mystics by technology. In the desert I was made to feel that the world of technology had become a mere conveyor belt of images, a magic machine that controlled my experience of the world. The mystics were the only one who could call themselves mystics. Heres a world where the most common objects are what we call cameras and they make images, they are controlled by a sensor. The mystics were the only ones who could use the camera as an art medium. The camera is the most common, the most visible, the most available. The mystics, in fact, used the camera as a medium for their mystification. They did it by arranging the images on a board and the camera was a key element in the mystics ritual. They used the camera to ask, Who created this world? Who is creating these images? The mystics used the camera as a tool, and the camera was their means of communication. The camera is the most perfect of all the tools, it is the most absolutely human. But the mystics were not mystics. They were mystics who learned to use the camera and as a tool of communication they were able to draw a new connection between the technology of photography and the mystics search for a personal, personal image. The mystics were interested in the camera as an instrument for communicating with the other. They wanted to experience reality as an image, a reality that is not merely technical, but that is a reality of the body.

They seem to be the words of a drug addict, and to mean to the viewer to get high. They are also the words of the artist and curator, and I am always asking what Ive read in these works. Theyre the words of the self-taught and the celebrity. They have become an urban legend and they are no longer the blank, the unchanging, the unprovoked. They are a time capsule, a collection of mysteries and a grist for a narrative of growth, of the subversion of the power of the artist, of the artist as victim, of the artist as pervert, of the artist as voyeur, of the gallery. The show, curated by Thomas Wolff, was a stunning success. The installation consisted of a large number of small works, and a large number of works on paper. In the last room, in the back room, there were a few paintings on canvas, and a few small sculptures. All the objects were composed of some kind of text, the meaning of which was an ineffable, almost universal meaning, with no fixed meaning, and with no meaning to speak. It was a metaphorical landscape of little art, a mystery to be deciphered and forgotten. With all the things that have been added to the piece, the show, and in particular the installation, became a great public joke, a real celebration of the collaborative spirit of the gallery, and of the spirit of the artist. It was a celebration that was more than a parody of the art world. It was a celebration of the artistic vision, the artist as a mind-setting instrument, a materialization of the idea of the artist, a symbol of the artist as a means of entering the world and participating in its beauty.
