He is best known for his work in the highly personal and engrossing Zapatismo, a revolutionary political organization that emerged in Mexico in the late 1970s. Ortega was a man of many contradictions, from the intense, contradictory, and sometimes violent rhetoric of the group to the lack of any coherent ideology or practice. This exhibition of recent work, which was organized by the artist, included paintings, drawings, and collages, all of which were based on Zapatismo art. The Zapatistas declared their dedication to the revolution, and to the spirit of resistance and resistance to violence, but they never ceased to be conscious of the darkness of the world. Ortega made the world his own personal world, with the understanding that it could only be penetrated by a passionate, critical, and intellectually honest self-confidence. In this way, Ortega broke with the culture of the Zapatista movement and of the Mexican state, which had been founded on the principles of the revolution. In this show, Ortega presented a group of paintings, all dated 1999, that were made with a palette knife and ink. The paintings, which were all based on Zapatismo-inspired works, are made up of a single type of object: a human skull. In some of these paintings, a skull is surrounded by a circle of text, written in the style of Zapatismo: in this case, the writings of the leader of the Zapatista movement, Enrique Peña M. Guerrero. The words are written in an elegant and poetic style.
