So began this show, which was ostensibly about the contentious political and cultural machinations of contemporary art and the art-world-as-objective relationship. The bulk of the show was a series of seven acrylic-on-canvas works on paper, entitled Pairs, and the freshest of the latter were Tittle, and Fortunato, two separate works that come from a collection of classic image-works by the artists friend and confidante, and that we are told were conceived as his ongoing project. Each piece is collaged together, head-on, from a variety of media, and is presented on a flat, nonrectangular surface. It was the palette and hues, the combination of well-known abstract art tropes (piggy, butt, red, black, pink) and subversive looks (lots of slyly marred white on white) that made the shows most resonant moments resonant. The works were shown in a different way in the gallery than they would be found in a museum. The artist-run space was devoted to a short history of the artists life, the work that he created while working as a peddler in the London Underground. A tiny wall of a reproduction of his old-master Leisure & Plenty ad was mounted on the wall; chintzy black and orange stickers were etched on a wall, and a leather-covered vinyl sheet hung at eye level. In the corner of the room, a spray-painted sarcophagus lay on a plywood table. A metal object with an antique-looking fishtail and monochromatic blue and green paint splattered the floor. Beneath it, staccato text written in chartreuse script read: I, as an artist, am an Artist .

From the series Pepe and Seangs Grand Vacation (2018), 2019, they were collaged onto the wall, furthering the sense of a link to Ching. (Hence, their names: Gomez-Pepe, Queering, and PIGGY. The canvas was made using a technique called 'brick-pasting,' or in the case of this collage, a process of dipping lint-stained tar in paint, which stains and often erases the results.) Its color was darkened in a manner similar to chime-shifting effects applied to a boomerang. (The paintings overall effect is reminiscent of those achieved by metal rods in your toy gun.) The works title refers to the three-year anniversary of Ching passing away in March of that year. Ching, of course, was a very dear friend.Ching was a tenacious person, but unlike the late masters, he never let a cheap day pass by. He was neither bashful of his craft nor flippant about it. (He had, in fact, brought home a tenth anniversary painting of the same name.) The last time Ching made a painting, he painted black around his portrait of his father, Frank, which he hung in the gallery, while a white background and the logo of the hip-hop label Pharoahe Monks were added. Like the painting, the logo has been called a Can-Can, a Can-Grassie, and, the painting, titled Harry, 2018, is called Harry. The magic of the Can-Can was its combination with black. Dont forget, ching, he is also a supporter of the Red Pussy Posse, a queer rock band he founded in 1992. And he was a fan of the band members.

The work hangs at the bottom of the gallery, next to a catfish in a steel container. A few of the elements are arranged in a grid but most are not: the cat, the fish, and the seal—all each have a single line of calligraphy that translates as a single letter, suggesting that the designs are more generic than creative. All of the boxes, from which the design is derived, are labeled, so the end of the story is when and how one uncovers something novel. The images are accompanied by captions: descriptions of the objects names, and descriptions of their origin in the form of a drawing. The title of another untitled piece, Untitled, 2019, is a quote from the eponymous 1987 book of the same name by the Danish philosopher Stefan Beckmann. Beckmann used this in his 1896 book, titled The Order of Things, to argue that the order of things is never the same as the order of things. The order of things is always the cause of things; that is, the ordering of things is always the primary cause of things. And yet, Beckmann said, there is a sense in which this is true: A thing can never be an object if it is not the primary cause of things. Beckmann wasnt saying that this body of work did not have a primary cause, but rather that there is a meaning beyond the intrinsic facticity of its design. I think that, for me, is what connects Beckmann to the T-shirt. Beckmann argues that a thing can never be an object, so long as it is not the primary cause of things. The T-shirt is neither, in Beckmann's view, an object nor a thing. It is a sign, a symbol.

The paintings in this show, all 2017–18, follow in the grand tradition of the Futurist ideal of what is known as the grand composition: Each is a great poem with a small subplot. You can clearly hear the words on a radio broadcast or on a chat app, and you can also make out the letters. In the shows title, the plural of the word refers to the array of objects one might find in the beautiful illustrations for the book Seangs grand composition: Poem, a diagram, a drawing, a large, legible book, a painting, a keyboard, and, as in its translation, the word #—used to make up the names of all the books in the series, known collectively as Seangs grand composition.Sisons new paintings exploit this variety, however, at times rhyming with the titles. For example, The Color Picture, 2017, is composed of four images: a map of the world, the stars, a drawing of the moon, and a close-up of a man reading the newspaper, the latter in a jaundiced, even snarled form. Each of these works consists of two stripes on a black ground; each of them is associated with a color. The map, by contrast, is composed of black vertical stripes and a white horizontal line. In this case, the stars, seagulls, and birds of paradise—all in these colors—were painted on a white ground. The map, too, is a great poem with a subplot. The paintings were all made on large sheets of paper, and the pages were printed in muted hues that are notched in a gridlike pattern.
