The mother, whose face is painted black and white in the photos, appears to be taking a breath, her eyes closed, her mouth open, her nose pressed, her mouth closed. The mother-like figure in the photos is the same one in the three-part series of photographs called Mother and Son, all 1983. iz (Moms face, I am a star, 1984), which adds a note of mystery to the otherwise orderly exhibition. This work, too, was accompanied by a small, stationary, framed photocollage of the artist standing in front of the gallery, a tribute to her longevity. As in many of the other works in the show, the artist wore a red, crepe-covered mask. The mask and its accompanying accessory, a computer mouse, were interspersed with the artists hand and finger. The mouse was part of a series of four rotating screens that portrayed the artist looking at a large image of a star—a special kind of infrared—with the same face-off against the background. The image, made from a photograph of a star, is then reproduced with a Cibachrome print, resulting in a detailed, three-dimensional representation of a star. The stars shape and color are based on photographs taken by Hubble, and the artist, wearing a mask and a black wig, also played a game of Scrabble with the computer, making random letters and letters combinations, as if playing with a book. The computer, the mask, and the star all appear in this show as mysterious objects that have been made visible. The artist, as we know, has to be at her best when she is hiding behind the mask and the computer, because when she is not, the mask and the computer are always in the same place.

irca 10.0.1.2.1, 2011, is a complete assemblage of the four-dimensional trappings of a computer, including a keyboard, a mouse, a mousepad, and a monitor. The work is decorated with the titular phrase: My mother died of cancer, and I am a cancer patient. The word itself is a pun on the word mother, and the title hints at the themes of the two-dimensional works. It also refers to a piece of paper the artist found on the floor. The work is a kind of heuristic diary, a record of the daily activities of a patient, a family member, or a friend. The text is written in the form of a series of increasingly small, illegible, and cursory scribbles, in which the words are repeated, or ignored, in a repetitive pattern. In this way, the title is a sort of signature, an inscription on the surface of a work that is not there. The surface of the paper is the same as the surface of the computer. This is what is meant by the title of the work: The mother died of cancer, and I am a cancer patient. It is a work of memory that is not meant to be erased. The work is an abstract representation of a memory, a medium for thinking that is not there.
